Philo Ouweleen is a Japanologist who captures her fascination with Japan in research, writing and paintings. The project 'Stories from Kameoka' originated during an artist in residency program in Kameoka, a small Japanese city, 30 minutes away from Kyoto. The project consists of painted and written portraits of Kamejin —people from Kameoka—, and landscape paintings that illustrate the modern-day charms and challenges many small Japanese cities face. This exhibition is an intimate and loving portrait of daily Japanese life. Philo paints an image of Japan that moves away from the iconic highlights that often prevail in the presentation of contemporary Japan.
