Diversity Day

On this Diversity Day all UvA students are invited to join in the conversation about prejudices. Learn more about what prejudice is by a short academic lecture, hear about the experiences of different students and ask them your questions and enjoy a live music performance!

Academic Lecture: Bias & Brains

Irene van Driel

Dr. Irene I. van Driel works at the Youth & Media Entertainment group within the department of Communication Science.Her research and teaching focuses on the relationship between media and the development of youth.This year, she launched a new project together with two colleagues, the Media Representation Initiative, covering the power of media representation for youth.

Ugoeze Anyanwu Podler

Ugoeze Anyanwu Podler (2002) is an International Business Administration student at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. She was in the board of the Association of Students of African Heritage (ASAH), which aims to give students of African Descendant a voice and representation. As for the year 2022-2023, she got the honour to be in the board of the Student Union of the Netherlands, the LSVb. Through the Student Union she tries to also lobby for the rights of Students of Colour and other underrepresented groups on a political level. At the event Ugoeze will speak about her experiences as a black student at the university.

Jennifer Tosch

Jennifer Tosch, is a cultural historian, eduepreneur, founder of Black Heritage Tours in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and New York State (formerly, New Netherland); co-author of three books: Amsterdam (2014), New York State (2017) and The Netherlands (2019) Slavery Heritage Guides; and the co-founder/producer of the Sites of Memory Foundation, which produces ‘History theater’ about the hidden narratives of the Dutch colonial past.

Jennifer has Dutch and American nationality. She was born in Brooklyn, New York to Surinamese, parents, who immigrated to the US from Suriname, South America. Jennifer has lived in Amsterdam since 2012 and is working towards a Dual-Masters in Heritage & Memory Studies at the University of Amsterdam. At the event Jennifer will speak about her experiences as an 'older student' at the university. 

Deen Groothuizen

Deen Groothuizen (27, he/him/they/them) is a student at the faculty of social and behavioural sciences. Studies Cultural antropology and development sociology and is now in their second year. Deen gives speeches and workshops about gender inclusive work, study environments and work as an advocate for accesable transgender healthcare. In his free time he produces music, writes poetry. At the event Deen will have a speech about the LGBTQ community with a speech and questions.

Sara Ali

Hi! My name is Sara and I am a student at the Faculty of Medicine. This Wednesday I will be speaking about prejudice that muslim students face. This will include my personal experience, but also experiences of people close to me. 

Grâce Ndjako

Grâce Ndjako studied Philosophy and Political Sciences in Amsterdam and Paris. She is currently working on her PhD at the University of Amsterdam. She writes for Dipsaus Exclusives, the Nederlandse Boekengids and Hard//hoofd. In 2020, she contributed to the book  AfroLit: Moderne Literatuur uit de  Afrikaanse Diaspora [tran: AfroLit: Modern Literature from the African Diaspora], published by the publisher Pluim. Recently, her translation of Aimé Césaire's Discours sur le Colonialisme [tran: Discourse on Colonialism] was published by De Geus. At the event Grâce will speak about her experiences as a black PhD student

Amandla Awethu!

Amandla Awethu! is a writer, artist and currently also a BA student of Literary and Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam. She is also a founding member of the University of Colour (UoC) since it was established as a collective during the Maagdenhuis liberation of 2015. From 2015 Amandla Awethu! has been a member in the processes that lead up to the Diversity Commission (DIVCOM) headed by Professor Gloria Wekker. At the event Amandla Awethu! will speak about her experiences as a student with disabilities at the University of Amsterdam.

Emma Agricola

‘Emma Agricola is, as the youngest Diversity and Inclusion-professional of the Netherlands, working at Van Lanschot Kempen as an Inclusion- & Diversity Officer. She has a background in Public Administration and Gender Studies and has obtained 5 years of working experience in the field of Diversity and Inclusion within different sectors. In September 2022, she founded her company INCLUSYOUNG, with which she helps organizations retain their younger professionals. Many organizations face difficulties in this field; they demand much but do not give a lot back to their young employees. And that should be different, most definitely because of the tight labor market and scarcity of talent nowadays.

Emma has graduated on this topic and decided to combine scientific theories with practical tools to really help organizations take steps within this field. During Diversity Day 2022 Emma will elaborate on how young talents, like you, can give their career an inclusive kickstart. See you there!’
