In 2015, VOX-POP started as pop-up location for cultural programs, using the empty spaces of the Binnengasthuisterrein. Over the years, VOX-POP has become a thriving creative center within the Humanities at the UvA, which has provided us with our current permanent location in building BG 3, right at the heart of the Binnengasthuisterrein.
Our philosophy
At VOX-POP we translate academic theories and questions into a diverse and creative program, which allows for new ways to connect the world of the university to the city. Philosophy, art, film, theatre, culture, history, music, religion, language, and many other disciplines find each other in VOX-POP. Creativity, experimentation and the sharing of knowledge are paramount.
Our organisation
Part of our program is organised by a permanent VOX-POP team, consisting of project manager Cleo Thomas, and student assistants Imme de Bie and Martin van Wijk. Additionally, each year a group of talented students becomes part of the VOX-POP family. They organise the recurring CLOSE-UP evenings.
Connection with the neighborhood
Since VOX-POP is an open space within the University quarter, students, alumni, UvA-staff and local residents can request the space for a self-organised event. This way, the academic community is co-owner of VOX-POP. Because the space is flexible, it lends itself well to many different activities, ranging from poetry nights, art installations, and small concerts to film screenings and painting workshops. Last but not least: all events in VOX-POP are always free of charge and open to everyone.
