The first public seminar explores the relationship between botanical research and (in)tangible heritage. How can we understand the Petunia collection and its surrounding research practices as living heritage? Prof. Dr. Ronald Koes will provide an introduction to the history and use(fulness) of the Petunia collection. Dr. Tamara van Kessel (programme coordinator Heritage and Memory Studies) will talk about the petunia collection from a cultural heritage perspective.

Ronald Koes

Ronald Koes is a professor in Plant Genetics at University of Amsterdam. His research aims to unveil how genes govern the development and coloration of flowers and how modifications of these genes (mutations) during evolution and breeding produced the enormous diversity of flower shapes and colors that is found today .

Tamara van Kessel

Tamara van Kessel

Dr. Tamara van Kessel is programme coordinator of the international dual master’s Heritage and Memory Studies (UvA) and lecturer within this programme, as well as co-developer of the new bachelor’s Global Arts, Culture and Politics (UvA). Her own specialisation lies in (the history of) international cultural relations, including heritage diplomacy.
