In the clothes swap corner you can actively engage with your own wardrobe and reflect on your consumption habits. By bringing in one or more pieces of clothing, you can pick out the same number of clothing items that others have brought in. This activity aims to illustrate how your clothes can be cared for and to last longer just by handing them to others. The clothes swap corner is open for the whole duration of EcoThreads and drop-ins for the clothes will be collected one week before the start of the event.
You bring a piece of clothing to the workshop (it could be one you've swapped at the clothes swap corner), and you can transform it into art. The theme for the design is tipping points and degrowth, but the content of the painting can be anything you associate with the theme. An UvA student, who is passionate and experienced in making sustainable art, will be guiding you throughout the workshop. The purpose of the programme is to demonstrate how your individual effort can contribute significantly to a more collective sustainable way of living.
The CrochetForChange workshop allows you to see how old clothing can be used as thread to make new pieces through crocheting. Don't worry if you don't know how to crochet; instructions for the different steps will be provided. If you already know how to crochet, you can join in and start or continue your own work. While you're crocheting, prompts around the theme of slow fashion will be provided during the workshop. This gives you the opportunity to discuss with others and voice your opinion on the topic of slow fashion and upcycling. By learning or practicing crocheting as a craft and skill, you leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of the meaning of upcycling your clothes.
