Throughout March, VOX-POP and Spotlight will share snippets of queer history — from Amsterdam and beyond — via Instagram stories. On March 31, these highlights, along with other queer historical fun facts, will form the basis of a friendly competition.

You can participate individually or in a team of up to four people. Don’t have a team in mind? Don’t worry — you can join one at the start of the event and meet new people! A small prize awaits the winning team ;)

What is Queer Underground?

Queer Underground, organised and curated by the queer student association Spotlight, sheds light on the multiple layers of queer identities and the intricate, “underground” connections to one’s cultural roots, heritage, and past experiences. The exhibition, featuring artworks by seven queer artists, invites you to reflect on the wide variety of experiences under the “queer” umbrella and their complex, intimate, entangled, and situated realities.

  • Curators: Marilina Giannakakou (she/her), Ksawery Dutkiewicz, Deborah Ferrari, Selin Özel, Ai Zhong
  • Artists: Adrián Ortega, Antoni Elnes, Jane, Noah (Nikos), Patricia Gutiérrez, Vitaliia Mitali, Zuzia
Host: Ksawery Dutkiewicz

Ksawery Dutkiewicz (any pronouns) is a prospective curator and museologist currently following UvA’s Ancient Studies BA program. They try to incorporate their background in art and accessibility into making museums within reach for all. He juggles the rest of his time between his thesis and being the secretary of Spotlight. As the curator and a co-supervisor of the Queer Underground exhibition, she is responsible for facilitating the exhibition’s creation, curating artist submissions and handling internal and external communications.

Host: Alivia

Alivia (she/he) is a Bachelor’s student in Global Arts, Culture and Politics at UvA and the chair of the Humanities Student Council for the Activistenpartij. As chair, her role entails representing student voices, especially the marginalised ones, and enacting change at the UvA wherever possible. In his free time, he frequently volunteers for Spotlight and other associations, but he also enjoys baking, cooking and DIY projects.

About Spotlight

Their ongoing projects include the gender-affirming clothing campaign GenderSwap, the informational campaign ENGAGE!, and the Queer Cinephile Society.
