Do you reflect fragments of your inspirations through the clothes you wear? Can people tell what kind of music you listen to by the way you present yourself? And would you like to showcase your curated, multifaceted self in a multimodal exhibition? Apply to the interactive programme Fragments of Being and explore questions surrounding identity, subcultural affiliation, and self-expression through music and fashion.

About the project

The world that we live in is becoming ever smaller. Through TikTok, Instagram and other social media, the whole world seems to be at our fingertips. With the touch of a button (or the swipe of a touchscreen), we can connect with people across the globe.

At the same time, increasing globalisation, driven in part by internet culture, means that trends and styles circulate more rapidly than ever. In this context, some argue that subcultures have "died". Yet contemporary forms of cultural expression, such as music and fashion, still serve for many as important means of expressing their constantly evolving identities.

Do young people today still associate with labels such as punk, hippie, or gabber, or has self-expression become more fragmented, more pick ‘n mix?

What will you do?

Through the programme series Fragments of Being you will explore the fragments that shape and construct your identity. Across four guided, interactive sessions, you will:

  • Capture yourself in sound through sampling, remixing, and sonic self-expression in a mixtape workshop led by a sound artist.
  • Experiment with collage and assemblage to create a fragmented representation of your identity.

  • Develop your own visual representation of self with the guidance of a professional photographer, to be included in the final exhibition.

  • Reflect on whether subcultures still exist, whether identity is fixed or shaped by context, and which influences affect how you present yourself.

The outcome of the workshops will be included in an audiovisual exhibition at VOX‑POP, on view from November 2026 to January 2027.
