Queer Underground

We would like to invite queer artists to explore the theme of intersectionality and how it shapes queerness in its infinite, unique, and diverse forms. We want to shed light on the multiple layers of queer identities and the intricate, “underground” connections to one’s cultural roots, heritage, and past experiences.

We’d love to see a variety of media used such as paintings, textile works, audiovisual material etc. Paintings, textile works, audiovisuals are just some of the possible media. Through our exhibition we aim to show a slice of the unique ways of experiencing queerness and unfold the unspoken sides of queer identities through art.

What should be included in my proposal?

  • Your artist CV and a brief introduction of who you are as an artist

  • +-500 words about your proposed work and your reflection on the theme

  • Your artist portfolio

What is Spotlight?

Spotlight UvA is the queer student association at the University of Amsterdam.

Extra information

While Spotlight is one of  UvA’s queer student associations, we are open to receiving applications by any artist, not exclusively students. Thus, we invite you all to send us your proposal, and we would love to see how the theme inspires you, as well as how it is reflected in your art. 

Similarly, the exhibition will be open to every and any visitor, extending the university environment to the larger context of Amsterdam. We are envisioning the space as a public exhibition space, open to a wider audience.
