RAÍZES

A physical theater piece and Improvisation by Fernando Oliveira. Raízes is a Portuguese word that means 'roots'; the basis, the essential connection between  people, the inherent bond that binds people together. The idea of poetic time - a concept inspired by the popular and contemporary dances of Brazil - was utilized to create a dynamic narrative by using nonlinear scenes and to show how symbols, images, sounds, and movements are connected and interpreted.

The idea for this project came out as a means of thinking poetically about the cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity of the artist in this very complex moment.

Fernando Oliveira (BR)

Fernando Oliveira (1983) is a Brazilian actor, dancer, musician and performer based in Amsterdam. Fernando graduated in performing arts from the INDAC - Art and Science Institute, NAC – Núcleo de Artes Cênicas in UNESP (São Paulo, BR). 2013

In the Netherlands he has worked as an actor, dancer and experimental filmmaker, the film ​Sunset ​being a finalist at the European Cinematography AWARDS -ECA.

He has danced and performed for companies such as J. Garcia Company of Contemporary Dance (São Paulo, BR), GRUA - Gentlemen de rua (São Paulo, BR), NAC Núcleo de Artes Cênicas (São Paulo, BR), Nina Wijnmaalen Company (Groningen, NL), Sanne clifford & co | choreography (Amsterdam, NL), Corneliu Ganea Choreography (Amsterdam, NL), and more. 

In 2016 Fernando founded the ANT - Physical Theatre Company based Amsterdam/NL. 

ANT Physical Theatre

ANT Physical Theater is a project-based company created by Fernando Oliveira in 2016(Amsterdam/NL); the focus of the group’s interdisciplinary collaborations with musicians, actors, dancers, designers, and filmmakers is to stage inner revolutions by connecting classical and contemporary references through theater, dance, music and improvisation. The culturally diverse backgrounds of the performers and mediums of art utilized create unique performances in conversation with current events.

The symbol ANT references the collective effort of all the collaborators in creating a united vision that reflects and shares insights from many voices.  ANT is a culturally diverse group of young Amsterdam performers aiming to become a fresh voice for Dance/Physical Theatre in Amsterdam and abroad.
