As part of the Week Against Racism, VOX-POP and student association Offscreen present a screening of Fruitvale Station (2013). This powerful film tells the true story of Oscar Grant, a young Black man who was fatally shot by the police on New Year’s Eve 2008. The film offers a poignant look at institutional racism and police violence—issues that remain as urgent today as ever, both globally and in the Netherlands.

About the Film

Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, Fruitvale Station follows the last 24 hours of Oscar Grant’s life. Through everyday moments, the film highlights the systemic inequalities and racial profiling that continue to shape society, often with devastating consequences.

Discussion & Reflection

Following the screening, we will hold an open discussion about racism and police violence, both in the U.S. and the Netherlands. How does this film reflect today’s reality? And what can we do to create change? This conversation provides a space for reflection, dialogue, and shared experiences.
