An exhibition curated two Humanities students at VOX-POP
We are Giulia and Ada, two art and curation enthusiasts and graduates of the Bachelor's in Global Arts, Culture and Politics at the University of Amsterdam. We want to raise questions about how digital technologies frame users' digital identity through interfaces, social features and algorithms that challenge the distinction between performance and authenticity. This is our first exhibition, and we are excited to bring together emerging artists who approach questions of identity and digital culture from different perspectives.
Nowadays, curating a digital persona has become an integral part of our life, from social media and dating app profiles to video game avatars, digital archives and online forums. How do interfaces, algorithms, and engagement features within software programmes shape the relationship between our digital persona and self-identity? Can we still draw a clear boundary between the person we perform ourselves to be online and our authentic self?
The exhibition explores how software programmes like social media, mobile applications and video games shape how we construct and present our digital identities. These digital technologies are not only tools of direct communication; they are also limited systems through which we curate our avatar, or user account, often based on social expectations and digital trends.
The social functions of apps and videogames, together with established social expectations, create a fluid dynamic between the authentic self and performativity. The artworks in this exhibition will explore such a fluid and blurred dynamic, which has potential for broader discussions about self-image, social validation, interaction and online trends.
Our goal is to create an interactive experience for the audience connected to the digital world, and create a space for self-reflection about who we are in a highly digitised reality. Running from 30 November to 6 December, the exhibition will display five previously created artworks by emerging artists working in installations, visual art, sound, digital media, video and photography. Two are already selected, three will be chosen through this open call.
We are looking for multimedia and audiovisual works that add a unique perspective to the exhibition theme. We are particularly interested in artworks that deal with self-identity and social interactions. We welcome different approaches to the theme, whether your work is personal, critical, playful, experimental, or interactive.
Please send us a photo and a video (or additional documentation) of the work you would like to display, accompanied by a short description and a brief self-introduction and/or portfolio.
